A local business organization is proving that it is more than networking and luncheons.
Members of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Northern Nevada like to have fun too, and they are doing it in style at the chamber's first black-tie gala.
And that is not the only way the chamber is branching out.
"Night of Stars," or "Noche de Estrellas," will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 and include dinner and music by Little Joe & La Familia and Stefani Montiel.
Black ties and ball gowns are encouraged for guests, said Giovanis Montero, business development/insurance coordinator for Greater Nevada Credit Union.
"The main idea is to show the community what he have to offer," Montero said. "And to show we know how to have fun."
Although the event is intended to be fun, the chamber hopes to use the gala as a major fundraising effort to carry the HCC through the next year. If successful, it could provide chamber funding in future years.
"Instead of having smaller fundraisers throughout the year, we wanted to put on a major event," said Veronica Romero, Realtor for New Dimensions Inc. in Reno. "It's going to be very elegant."
Plus, the chamber is doing more. A partnership with the Reno Rodeo in June brought the rodeo Spanish language fans for the first time.
The brainchild of Greg "Lightning" Williams, a member of the Reno Rodeo Association Executive Committee and owner of Lightning Auctions in Sparks, the Reno Rodeo got approval from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association to broadcast the rodeo in Spanish.
The HCC's Executive Director Eduardo Wagner was chosen to announce the rodeo in Spanish, which was a perfect fit for the former PRCA bull rider.
"It was great because he already knows the sport," said Steve Schroeder, communications director for the Reno Rodeo Association and manager of Synergy Communciations in Sparks. "If you can't understand what is going on, you won't enjoy the rodeo nearly as much."
The chamber is hoping to gain another partnership and get more exposure with another big event for Reno: Hot August Nights.
Don Schmid, the new executive director for HAN, said at Tuesday's chamber luncheon that he hopes to infuse the event with new blood.
"Hot August Nights has a $200 million impact on the local economy," Schmid said. "But attendance has stagnated.
"We want to push the envelope by embracing the Hispanic community and including more of the culture of the 1970s to attract younger participants."
Sponsorships still are available for the HCC's upcoming gala. Tickets are $125 each for dinner and the concert; $50 to attend only the concert. Details: 786-4100.
